Women's Tennis Drops Close Contest to San José State 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis put up a valiant effort against crosstown rival San José State but lost 4-3 on Friday at the Degheri Tennis Center.    

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Duru Durgun clinched the match at 4-2 with a three set victory over Tian Yu Dong 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 on court two.  
  • San José State (7-1) took two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point.  The clincher came atop the lineup where Cheuk Ying Shek and Carla Urchoeguia defeated Jillian Roa and Velizara Fielva 6-2. 
  • Shek, the No. 97 ranked singles player, put the Spartans up 2-0 with a straight set win over Daniella Dimitrova 6-4, 6-2 on court one. 
  • Santa Clara answered with wins on courts three and four to even the match at 2-all. On court three, Fileva downed Urchoeguia 6-1, 6-3 and on court four Roa defeated Olaya Bances 6-3, 6-2. 
  • Roa remained perfect on court four, winning her ninth straight in that spot of the lineup.  She is 9-1 overall this season.  
  • Soledad Fayos put SJSU up 3-2 on court six with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Juliette Krumholz.  
  • Shortly after the match clincher, Anna Rahman defeated Emma Fantousis on court five for the final team score of 4-3 in favor of the Spartans. 
  • It was the third straight loss for Santa Clara (6-5).
