vs. CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN
- LA VERNE, Calif. — The Broncos' tournament opener versus California Lutheran (5-8) came all the way down to the final minutes of the fourth period. The teams were knotted up at 8-8 through three periods, and they traded single goals again to start the fourth, making the score 9-9.
Â
- That's when the Regals went on a game-winning surge. CLU scored three unanswered goals starting at the 5:27 mark. And once it took a two-goal, 11-9 lead, its defense locked down, too. Two saves by CLU goalkeeper Izzy De Souza and two Santa Clara (4-6) turnovers helped preserve the Regals' advantage. Chambliss scored SCU's final goal with 69 seconds left, and Chambliss – along with two other Broncos – had shots in the final minute, but all were saved or went off the post.
Â
- Rodman led the scoring with three goals. Moynihan and Rizof added two goals each. On the Cal Lutheran side, Miranda Miller scored three goals along with contributions from Katie Knight and Bethany Metcalfe, each netting two.
Â
- The game started off evenly matched, with both teams trading goals in the first period for a 3-3 score. However, Cal Lutheran gained the upper hand in the second quarter by scoring four goals, leading to a 7-5 advantage at halftime. De Souza made six saves for the Regals, while Haley Tassell made seven for the Broncos.
vs. POMONA-PITZER
- CLAREMONT, Calif. — Friday's 21-11 final score versus Pomona-Pitzer (5-5) was not indicative of how close the game actually was for most of the evening. The Sagehens scored seven unanswered goals in the fourth after they entered the final period with only a four-goal advantage. And even that fourth period began with back-to-back turnovers for the Sagehens before they settled in and started scoring.
Â
- Santa Clara matched Pomona-Pitzer with five goals in the second, and only trailed by three at halftime, 10-7. Chambliss scored both of the Broncos' goals in the first period while Pomona-Pitzer tallied five in that frame as well. Santa Clara was only one goal behind Pomona-Pitzer in the third period, scoring three goals to the Sagehens' four.
Â
- Chambliss and Slater both scored three goals in the game. Moynihan and Rizof both had two, as well as both adding two assists each. Kate Rodman led the Broncos with three steals. Tassell recorded four saves. Zosia Amberger made eight saves for the Sagehens.Â
