Women's Basketball Wins Fourth in a Row in Return Home

Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball picked up its fourth-straight win with a 69-58 victory over Pacific on Thursday night to begin a three-game homestand. The Broncos (13-11, 7-7 WCC) saw their lead shrink to just one late in the fourth, but they finished the game on a 12-2 run to put the Tigers (11-13, 7-7 WCC) away.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara got off to a good start and used an early 8-0 run, with six points coming from Olivia Pollerd, to jump out to a five-point lead. The Broncos would get the advantage up to 20-12 by the end of the first.
  • Neither team went on a big run in the second, but Pacific did manage to get the score within three twice, but Santa Clara had it back to 33-26 by the end of the first half.
  • The Broncos got the lead out to as many as 12 and it never dipped below eight in the third as the teams went back and forth. Santa Clara held a 48-38 lead heading into the final period.
  • Pacific rattled off seven in a row to get within one midway through the fourth. After Maddie Naro knocked down a triple, Daria Nestorov answered right with a 3-pointer of her own to make it 57-56. The Broncos answered back with a 9-0 run that got the lead back to double figures with a minute remaining.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara shot 48.9-percent from the floor while going 4-for-13 from beyond the arc. The Broncos also took advantage at the charity stripe, going 19-of-22.
  • Pacific shot 36.7-percent in the game but was held to just 3-of-19 from downtown.
  • Pollerd led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting and added eight rebounds and four steals to go with two blocks. Naro scored 16, one off her career-high, while knocking down three 3-points and going 7of-8 from the free throw line. Malia Latu scored 12 and had seven assists.
  • Liz Smith scored 18 to lead the Tigers and pulled down eight boards. Elizabeth Elliott scored 11 and was 5-of-5 from the field while Nestorov also scored 11.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Latu has now scored in double figures in 10 straight games. During that time, she is averaging 14.8 ppg.
