Softball Head Coach Carbonatto Records 100th Career Win in Saturday Split

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara head softball coach Gina Carbonatto recorded her 100th career victory in Saturday's Capital City Classic Tournament when the Broncos defeated UC Davis 9-7 in extra innings.  SCU dropped the second game to Sacramento State 10-2.

Santa Clara 9 - UC Davis 7 (8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Carbonatto recorded her 100th career victory after the Broncos (10-5) erupted for seven runs in extra innings and held on for a 9-7 win over UC Davis (5-13) in a game played under protest by the Aggies.
  • The top of the eighth started with the international tiebreaker rule in effect placing Cairah Curran at second base with the game tied at 2-all.  The Broncos loaded the bases on Hope Alley's single and Kyla Acres hit by a pitch.  Taryn Clements singled in two runs to give SCU a 4-2 lead.  Marie MartorellaAbigail Charpentier and Curran also had RBI hits in the inning as when it was all said and done, the Broncos had put up seven runs on five hits and an Aggie error to take a 9-2 lead.  It also included the UC Davis protest about whether a Bronco runner on second left the base while the ball was in the circle after a rundown play.
  • UC Davis made things interesting in the home half of the eighth, scoring five runs to cut the lead to 9-7.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Alaina Valdez came in relief and got Alyssa Dethlefson to pop up to earn her first save of the season.
  • The game was scoreless through the first four frames before Charpentier put the Broncos on the board with an inside the park home run off Caroline Grimes.  They added another run on an RBI grounder by Acres to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Hannah Edwards started strong in the circle, shutting out the Aggies through five innings but in the sixth, she gave up a two-run game-tying home run to Grace Kilday.  Edwards pitched into the eighth to get her third win.
  • UPDATE (March 5, 2025): the protest was denied.  The game is officially final.

Sacramento State 10 - Santa Clara 2 (6)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sacramento State (10-7) homered four times and scored in every inning to run rule Santa Clara 10-2 in six innings.  The Hornets offense accounted for 14 hits with seven of those going for extra bases while Caroline Evans threw a four hit complete game.  She improved to 4-2 on the year.
  • Facing Santa Clara (10-6) starter Cari Ferguson, Sacramento State got a run in the first on Madison Evers-Lyles RBI single.  And they hit four home runs in the next three innings from Lafulafu Malepeai, Nikki Barboza, Andrea Lira and Malissa George accounting for six runs to push the lead to 7-0.  Lira also tripled in a pair of runs in the fifth after the Broncos cut the lead with two runs in top half of the inning.
  • Sacramento State got their final run for the eight run difference on Shannon Garcia's double in the sixth.
  • Lira had a game-high four RBIs on 3-for-4 hitting.  George also had a three hit game.
  • Ferguson took the loss for the Broncos, falling to 2-4.
