SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 69 Santa Clara men's tennis blanked Portland 4-0 to pick up their second West Coast Conference win of the season despite multiple rain delays on Thursday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos took the doubles point and with the singles action under way, the rains came for the first delay that lasted an hour twenty minutes. When play resumed. SCU picked up right where they left off with three straight singles victories that was briefly interrupted by two more rain delays.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Valentin Faure clinched the match for Santa Clara (11-7, 2-1 WCC) on court six with a three set victory over Cade Fernando 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 about four and a half hours after the two squads started to play.
- In the first hour of play, the Broncos claimed the doubles point on Tiago Boschmans and Luca Lemaitre's win over Cade Fernando and Nikola Keremedchiev 7-5 on court two.
- Luca Bluett and John Kim also had a doubles victory, defeating Maxim Groysman and Stefan Skobelev 6-3.
- Just as he did in doubles, Bluett also got the first singles win when he took down Stefan Skobelev 6-4, 6-1 on court three to put the Broncos up 2-0 on the team scoreboard.
- Lukas Maskow was the next winner, beating Tom Garcia 6-3, 6-2 on court four to give SCU a 3-0 advantage.
- Portland dropped to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in league play.
