SAN JOSE, Calif. – Defensively miscues proved costly in Santa Clara's 4-3 loss to crosstown rival San José State on Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Softball Complex. The Spartans scored their third and fourth runs on errors to take a 4-2 lead and held on for a one run victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Mia Reynolds started in the circle for San José State (10-12) and threw the first five innings, was relieved in the sixth before re-entering in the seventh to close out the game with the potential game-tying run at first. In total, she allowed two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out five over six innings to improve to 5-7 on the year.
- Santa Clara (10-9) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame on RBI singles by Taryn Clements and Kyla Acres against Reynolds. The Broncos had three hits in the inning but Reynold allowed just two more hits the rest of the way while she was in the game.
- Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, San José State (10-12) cut the lead in half on triples by Aubrie Thomas and Reina Zermeno off Hannah Edwards.
- The Spartans took a 3-2 in the fourth when they loaded the bases and Thomas singled to tie the game up and on the play a throwing error by Rebecca Rubio allowed the go ahead run to score.
- SJSU added an insurance run in the sixth to push the lead out to 4-2. Cari Ferguson, who came in relief in the fourth inning, issued a walk to Thomas who promptly stole second before coming around to score on a Bronco error.
- The insurance run proved valuable as Hazyl Gray led off the top of the seventh with a triple off Lacie Ham and came home on Cairah Curran's single to get the Broncos within a run. Reynold re-entered the game and retired the 2-3-4 batters in the Bronco lineup to end the game, stranding Curran at first.
- Three Spartans had multiple hits while Curran went 3-for-4 for the Broncos.
- Edwards dropped to 3-2.
