SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team fell in a back-and-forth affair to the No. 24 ranked California Baptist Lancers 12-8 Saturday at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Broncos fell behind early, but clawed their way back, cutting the lead to two goals late in the fourth, but ultimately were unable to rally for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Lancers scored the first five goals of the game to take a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Broncos comeback attempt started at the midway point of the second period as Kate Rodman scored first followed by Libby Slater. Another Lancers goal gave them a 6-2 lead at the end of the first half.
• Back-to-back Lancer goals to start the second period were cut short by a goal from Kate Rodman. Goals from Mikayla Crowe and Sydney Maccabe cut the Lancer lead to 9-7 at the start of the fourth period. However, that's as close as the Broncos would get as back-to-back Lancer goals put them up four, and despite a late goal from Chloe Rizof, the Lancers scored again at the buzzer to take the game 12-8.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

• Kate Rodman led the Broncos with three goals, while Haley Tassell played all 32 minutes in goal, recording seven saves.
• Five different Broncos got on the scoresheet as Slater finished with two goals, Maccabe, Rizof, and Crowe had one goal each.
