Baseball Comes Back to Beat Gonzaga in Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — They did it again.

The Santa Clara University baseball team came from behind to win Sunday for the ninth time this season, using a five-run sixth inning to beat first-place Gonzaga, 7-5, in game three of the teams' West Coast Conference series at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos' five-run sixth gave them a game-deciding 7-3 lead. Ben Cleary led off the inning with his first career home run, a solo shot to center field, and Luke Devine broke the game open with a three-run blast to left-center to cap off the big inning.

  • The Broncos had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI single by Hayden Jung-Goldberg and a sac fly by Koen Carston. Santa Clara had loaded the bases with a Cleary double and a pair of back-to-back walks by Mateo Garcia and Dylan Joyce.

  • Victor Martinez entered in relief the very next half-inning, with two on and nobody out, trying to hold off the charging Bulldogs, who entered Sunday having won five in a row and 11 of their last 12. He would retire the next three Gonzaga hitters, two via strikeout and one popping up to third base to get the Broncos out of an early jam.

  • The Bulldogs did finally break through in the third by taking the lead, 3-2. An RBI single by Hudson Shupe scored Luca DiPaolo, and a two-run single by Tommy Eisenstat scored Ty Yukomoto and Shupe, putting Gonzaga ahead.

  • Cooper Lanz (2-1) had another outstanding relief appearance in earning the victory. He threw 3 1/3 innings of shutout, no-hit relief, striking out one and only walking one. The Bulldogs' Mikey Bell hit his third home run in the series in the 7th to cut the Santa Clara lead to 7-5.

  • Caden Wooster earned his fourth save of the season pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Broncos, navigating through an early jam in the ninth and logging three Ks.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3: Luke Devine had a career-high three RBIs on Sunday. All of his RBIs were from his three-run blast in the 6th. It was his third home run of the season.
  • 7: Santa Clara scored seven runs on Sunday, the 10th time they've done so this season; they are 8-2 in games where they score seven or more runs on the year
  • 9: Sunday marked the Broncos 9th come-from-behind victory on the season
  • .700: Ben Cleary hit .700 in the series against Gonzaga, going 7 for 10. He tied his career high Sunday with three hits including mashing the first home run of his career. Cleary is now hitting .304 on the season.
COMING UP
  • The Broncos will travel to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday to face Cal Poly. They will then play a three-game WCC road series against LMU, kicking off Thursday in Los Angeles.
