Softball's Seven-Game Win Streak Comes to an End in Series Finale to Pacific

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Pacific scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 3-all tie and held off a Santa Clara softball rally to take the series finale 5-4 on Sunday and snap the Broncos seven-game win streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • For the second time in the series, the game went to extra innings with Pacific (13-25, 2-4 WCC) coming out on top this time.  The Tigers plated two runs in the ninth on Amanda Bricker's sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Presley Barnes after loading the bases on three straight singles off reliever Hannah Edwards.
  • Trailing 5-3, Santa Clara's (25-15, 5-1 WCC) comeback attempt in the home half of the ninth came up just short.  Abigail Charpentier drew a walk against Alexa Lewis and came home on Cairah Curran's double.  With the tying run at second, Lewis got Rebecca Rubio to line out to left to end the game.
  • Lewis pitched the final 5 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win.  She gave up two runs on four hits, struck out three and walked two.  The only other run she gave up was a solo home run to Abigail Charpentier in the bottom of the seventh that sent the game to extra innings.  It was the Bronco senior's fifth round tripper of the season.
  • Pacific got on the board in the second on Olivia Silvestre's two-RBI double against Broncos starter Avery Seva.  It was one of three hits on the day for Silvestre who was batting in the ninth spot, a change from the first two games of the series where she batted atop the lineup.  Barnes and Peyton Clifford also had multiple hits for the Tigers, collecting 13 total as a team.
  • Santa Clara evened things on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Kyla Acres and Lauren Bryson in the fourth.
  • In the sixth, Pacific went ahead by a run when Barnes led off the sixth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Rory Schuck came into pinch run for Barnes as the move paid off when Clifford singled up the middle to plate Schuck.
  • Despite Sunday's loss, this was just the second time Santa Clara has won the first two West Coast Conference series, having first done it in 2022.

NEXT UP:

  • Santa Clara plays Saint Mary's in a WCC series starting with a single game on Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
