Women's Tennis Drops Road Contest at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga came back from being down 2-0 to defeat Santa Clara women's tennis 4-2 in a West Coast Conference match on Friday at the Stevens Center, eliminating the Broncos from qualifying for the WCC Tournament.  The win moved the Zags to 3-2 in conference play while the Broncos dropped to 2-3 and seventh place in the league standings with just one match to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Safien Boulonois clinched the match on court four over Jillian Roa in three sets, 2-6, 6-3 and 7-5 to complete Gonzaga's (11-8, 3-2 WCC) come back where they reeled off fourth straight singles victories to secure the win.
  • Trailing 2-0 on the team scoreboard, Norhan Hesham got things rolling for Gonzaga with her 6-3, 6-3 victory on court two over Velizara Fileva.  Rose Hayes followed, downing Anna Rahman 6-3, 6-4 on court five to even things at 2-all.  Emily Robertson kept the momentum going atop the lineup defeating Daniella Dimitrova 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 before Boulonois' clincher.
  • Santa Clara (8-11, 2-3 WCC) got the start they were looking for claiming the doubles point on wins by Dimitrova/Rahman on court two and Roa/Tian Yu Dong's clincher over Robertson/Ella Nielsen 6-3 on court one.
  • The Broncos made it 2-0 when Juliette Krumholz downed Lia Espinal 6-3, 6-3 on court six before the Bulldogs went on their run.
