SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 67 Santa Clara men's tennis cruised past Gonzaga 4-1 in the regular season finale at home on Saturday, securing a tie for second place in the West Coast Conference standings. The Broncos are 5-2 in the WCC along with Pacific. Pepperdine entered the day at 4-2 and play Saint Mary's later on Saturday with an opportunity to make it a three-way tie for second place. The seedings for the WCC Tournament, which will be held April 24-26 in San Diego, will be sorted out and confirmed by the league office with the various tiebreakers to work through.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- John Kim and Lukas Maskow each won their doubles and singles matches with Kim getting the match clincher at 4-1. He defeated Tom Dunlop 6-4, 6-4 on court four to extend the Broncos win streak to three.
- Santa Clara (14-8, 5-2 WCC) claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. At one, Luca Bluett and Kim took care of Kai-Luca Ampaw and Giovanni Branchetti 6-2. That was followed by the Tiago Boschmans and Maskow clincher over Jay Fairclough and Nicholas Reeves 6-4.
- Maskow won the first singles match 6-2, 6-2 over Reeves to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
- SCU took a 3-0 commanding lead on Alexander Watanabe Eriksson's 6-1, 6-3 victory over Branchetti atop the lineup.
- Gonzaga (9-11, 1-6 WCC) got their lone point from Oscar Rashed on court six. He beat Valentin Faure 6-4, 6-2 to make it 3-1 in favor of the Broncos with Kim coming up with the clincher shortly after.
