#3 Seed Men's Tennis Rolls Past #6 Saint Mary's in WCC Tourney Opening Round

SAN DIEGO – No. 3 seed Santa Clara men's tennis blanked No. 6 seed Saint Mary's 4-0 in the opening round of the West Coast Conference Tournament on Thursday at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University.  It was the second time the Broncos shutout the Gaels, having first done so during the regular season less than two weeks ago.  Santa Clara next faces No. 2 seed Pepperdine in the semifinals on Friday.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (15-8) swept through both the doubles and singles matches to cruise past Saint Mary's (5-17).  
  • The Broncos No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams secured the team doubles point.  John Kim and Luca Bluett won the first doubles match 6-2 over Carlos Ramos Membriv and Ellison Greco on court one.  Tiago Boschmans and Lukas Maslow followed suit with a 7-5 victory on court two, downing the Maxant brothers Bastien and Thibaud.
  • Kim was the first to finish his singles match taking care of Pierre Lieutaud on court four 6-3, 6-2. Alexander Watanabe Eriksson was next to push the Santa Clara lead to 3-0. He defeated Ramos Membriv 6-1, 7-5 atop the lineup.
  • SCU clinched the match at 4-0 on Valentin Faure's three set triumph over Francisco Duran 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on court six.
