Fileva with 3-all Clincher in Women's Tennis Thrilling Victory over Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Velizara Fileva delivered the match clincher at 3-all for Santa Clara women's tennis over Saint Mary's in a four hour 20 minute West Coast Conference marathon match at the Degheri Tennis Center on Thursday.  The win was the seventh of the season for Santa Clara, eclipsing last season's six win total in Broncos head coach Allie Will-Van Alstyne's second season on the Mission Campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Fileva defeated Juliette Daries 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 on court two, fending off a Gaels comeback attempt.  The Bronco senior had an opportunity to clinch the match in the second set but Daries fought off a pair of match points to send it to a third set.  In the third set, Fileva raced out to a 3-0 lead but Daries once again clawed back to even things at 3-all before Fileva pulled ahead to secure the Bronco victory at 4-3 to snap the team's eight match losing streak.
  • Santa Clara (7-10, 1-2 WCC) captured the elusive doubles point to get ahead 1-0.  Tian Yu Dong and Jillian Roa edged out Iman Khan and Olivia Rook 7-6 (7-5) atop the lineup to secure the doubles point for the Broncos, something that had eluded the team during the losing streak.
  • The singles battle was just as close.  Saint Mary's (5-9, 1-3 WCC) got on the board winning the first singles match on court four when Olivia Rook downed Jillian Roa 6-3, 6-0 to even the match at 1-all.
  • The Broncos won the next two matches on courts three and one to take a 3-1 lead.  On court three, Dong beat MiaAngelina Ruja 7-5, 6-1.  Dimitrova followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Khan on court one.
  • The Gaels came back to knot the team score at 3-all on Weekley's 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jamie Pope on court six, followed by Stefanie Silva's 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 over Jamie Pope win on six setting the epic decider between Fileva and Daries.
