Softball Drops Midweek Contest Against No. 17 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 17 Stanford scored 10 unanswered runs with back-to-back five run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to come back from two runs down in the 10-2 victory over Santa Clara softball on Wednesday played inside the cavernous Stanford Football Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Stanford (36-10) batted around in the inning, putting up five runs on three hits, three walks and a Santa Clara error.  All five runs were unearned with four of those coming off the bats of Kyra Chan and Joie Economides on a pair of two-RBI base hits.
  • Facing Bronco pitcher Alaina Valdez, the Cardinal loaded the bases on a lead off double by Kylie Chung, a walk and an error by first baseman Leiora Davidson.  River Mahler's RBI grounder cut the Santa Clara lead in half, 2-1.  With two outs, Chan put Stanford ahead 3-2 singling in two runs and extended the lead to 5-2 on Economides' base knock.
  • The Cardinal added five more runs in the sixth, the last two runs on Chan's double to push the lead out to eight runs for the run-rule victory.
  • Chan finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs hitting in the fifth spot of the lineup.  The three through six hitters combined to drive in 10 runs.
  • Santa Clara (28-18) got their runs in the third inning.  Cairah Curran reached on a bunt single for her 72nd hit of the season, matching the Bronco single season record (since at least 2000) alongside Angela Kabanuck and Jessica Clee.  The next batter, Rebecca Rubio, drew a walk on four pitches against Chung.  With runners at first and second, Chung uncorked a wild pitch and Cardinal catcher Allie Clements threw the ball into left field trying to throw out the advancing runner to allow Curran to score the first run of the game.  Hazyl Gray followed with a single to center to plate Rubio to make it 2-0.
  • It was a bullpen game for the Santa Clara pitching staff as all six hurlers saw action with Cari Ferguson getting the starting nod.  In her lone inning of work, the ERA leader in the West Coast Conference, gave up three straight singles to open the game but Jade Berry hit a grounder to second baseman Cairah Curran to cut down the lead runner at home.  With the bases still loaded, Kyra Chan lined into a double play as Ferguson escaped out of the bases loaded no out jam.
  • Avery Seva came in relief to start the second inning and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings before giving way to Gray in the third who kept the Bronco lead at 2-0.  In the fifth inning, Alaina Valdez entered as the fourth Bronco hurler.  Kendal Manley and Hannah Edwards also saw action inside the circle.
