Softball Completes First Sweep of WCC Opening Series in Program History

SAN DIEGO – Santa Clara softball got contributions throughout the lineup in the 10-1 run-rule victory over San Diego to complete the series sweep at the brand new Reggie Smith Softball Complex on Sunday.  It was the first sweep of a West Coast Conference opening series in program history since softball play started in the WCC in 2014.  Another milestone was reached with Sunday's win, the 113th career victory for Broncos head coach Gina Carbonatto tying her with Marcy Crouch atop the most wins in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (23-14, 3-0 WCC) scored early and often putting up five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second en route to a 10-1 five inning run-rule victory.  Eight of the 11 hits in the game came in the first two frames.  A total of eight batters had a hit with multi-hit games from Cairah Curran, Hazyl Gray and Leiora Davidson.  Gray and Davidson also drove in two runs along with Hope Alley.
  • The Broncos sent nine batters to the plate in the opening inning and got RBIs from Gray, Davidson and Abigail Charpentier.
  • In the second, the first three hitters safely reached base including a two-RBI single by Alley to knock out starter Emma Giaime who took the loss.  The hit parade continued against reliever McKenna Braegelmann with Taryn Clements doubling home Alley and Lauren Bryson singling in Clements to push the lead to 9-0.
  • After tossing a shutout a day earlier, Hannah Edwards started in the circle and pitched the first two innings before giving way to Gray.  The Bronco duo combined to allow just one hit, a double to Taylor Johnson, over five strong innings.
  • Gray picked up the win to improve to 8-2.  She struck out four and walked one.
  • San Diego (16-21, 0-3 WCC) got a run across in the fourth, their first of the series, on a Bronco error.  Johnson doubled and came home on a throwing error by third baseman Elle Merlino on Shawnese Hogue-Lacy's sacrifice bunt.
  • Over the three game series, Santa Clara outscored San Diego 20-1.
  • Carbonatto, coaching in her sixth season on the Mission Campus, now has a 113-129 record.  Marcy Crouch coached from 2000-04 and has a 113-166 record.

  • Santa Clara hosts Pacific in a three game WCC series starting Saturday with a doubleheader.  Sunday's game is sold out but tickets are still available for Saturday's games.
