Men's Soccer Edged By No. 4 Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer went toe-to-toe against No. 4 Stanford but the Cardinal's Will Cleary and Tomo Allen tallied goals in the second half and was edged 2-1 on Thursday night at Stevens Stadium.  The Broncos controlled the pace of play in the opening 45 minutes and took a 1-0 lead into the half courtesy of Tyler Tipton.  Stanford came out strong in the second half and outshot Santa Clara 10-5 with two of them finding the back of the net to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Allen's game winning goal came in the 62nd minute when Takashi Sasaki whipped in a pass from the left side, the ball rattled around with several defenders in the area before Allen took control and poked it past goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn.
  • Six minutes earlier, Cleary delivered the equalizer on a set piece, heading in the goal on a corner kick from Alex Chow.
  • Tipton got Santa Clara (0-1-2) on the board in the 25th minute.  A pass from Simon Diagana to the right side found Pierce Dyal who delivered a well placed diagonal ball above a Stanford defender that Tipton controlled with his knee before slotting it to the far post beating Rowan Schnebly.  It was Tipton's first goal of the season.
  • Santa Clara had a good look in the final seconds of the match but Will Wiersdorf's shot sailed high securing the Cardinal victory.
