Women's Basketball Cruises to 34-Point Win at Seattle

SEATTLE – Santa Clara women's basketball won its fourth road game in a row with a commanding 93-59 victory over Seattle Thursday evening. The Broncos (17-5, 7-2 WCC) got rolling midway through the first quarter and didn't slow down and never allowed the Redhawks (5-14, 1-7 WCC) to get back in it with any momentum.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Santa Clara found itself down 11-5 at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter after a triple followed by a jumper from Andjela Bigovic. From that point on, the Broncos would outscore Seattle 13-0 in the period with the Redhawks missing their final seven attempts from the field. Delainey Miller led the way with eight of the points during the run as Santa Clara took an18-11 lead into the first break.
  • A 7-0 run early in the second stretched the Broncos lead out to 14 and after two buckets in a row for Seattle, Santa Clara rattled off another 7-0 run to make it a 36-19 lead midway through the quarter. The Broncos scored the last five of the first half and led 43-25 heading into the locker room.
  • The lead continued to grow in the third quarter as Santa Clara used a 10-0 run to get out on top by 26. The quarter came to an end with a 3-pointer from Ashley Hawkins that made it a 65-38 lead heading into the fourth.
  • There were no big runs in the final quarter but the Broncos steadily added to the lead and had their biggest quarter of the night, dropping 28 points in the final period.

NOTABLE:

  • Santa Clara shot 44.3-percent (35-for-79) from the field and went 13-of-37 from beyond the arc.
  • Delainey Miller had a career night to lead the Broncos. She set a career-high with a game-leading 19 points and also set career bests with seven field goals made and 12 attempts. Miller just missed a double-double with nine boards as well.
  • Four other Broncos were in double-figures on the night to round out the balanced offensive attack. Ava Schmidt and Hawkins both scored 26 with Hawkins going 7-of-10 from the field with five rebounds and four assists and Schmidt pulling down five boards. Kylee Fox scored 15 with three 3-pointers made and Alana Goodchild provided a late spark with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from deep, in just five minutes of action.
  • Seattle shot it at 33.8-percent (23-for-68) while going just 3-of-19 from downtown.
  • Ella Brubaker led the Redhawks with 16 points and added five rebounds. Bigovic scored 13 with six boards and Chloe Manga scored 11 with five rebounds.
  • Santa Clara dominated on the glass, winning the battle of the boards 54-35, including 20-11 on the offensive end.
  • The Broncos' bench scored 38 points.
  • Santa Clara scored 22 fast break points.
  • The team's 17-5 start is the bests since the 2000-01 team started 18-5. That squad went to the WNIT.
