Early Goals Lead to Draw With Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's soccer tied Saint Mary's 1-1 on Saturday. The Broncos (7-2-7, 3-0-3) finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots, including 20-2 in the second half, but could not find a go-ahead goal as the Gaels (9-2-5, 3-2-1) defense held strong and Kate Plachy came up huge with her team down a player due to a red card for almost the entire second half.

Kennedy Schoennauer put Santa Clara ahead in the fourth minute off Tessa Ferguson's assist, but Saint Mary's answered 25 seconds later to make it 1-1. The Broncos continued to create chances, earning corner kicks in the 16th, 23rd and 44th minutes while getting shots from Izzy DeBuyl and Schoennauer. DeBuyl put a shot on frame in the final minute of the half, but it was saved as the teams went to halftime tied 1-1.

Santa Clara spent much of the second half pressing while the match was tied 1-1, especially after Saint Mary's was shown a red card at 45:14.. The Broncos recorded 20 shots and eight corner kicks in the half, with Schoennauer putting multiple attempts on frame that Plachy saved. The pressure did not yield a goal, and the match finished in a 1-1 draw.

Schoennauer scored a goal and led Santa Clara with 10 shots, including five on goal. Ferguson recorded an assist and added one shot. Litsy Alcocer finished with four shots. Ally Harrison played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.

Brittany Holden scored on her lone shot on goal. Elizabeth Vega recorded an assist and put her only shot on frame. Plachy played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves, including seven in the second half. Ashlyn Vaughn led the Gaels with two shots.

Up next, the Broncos visit Pepperdine on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Malibu.
