Men's Soccer Drops Road Match at Pacific 2-1

STOCKTON Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute but conceded a pair of goals in the first half to fall 2-1 to Pacific in a West Coast Conference match on Saturday night.  The Broncos had a golden opportunity to level the match in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick but Tigers goalkeeper Alejandro Caracheo Luna made the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (3-6-2, 0-1-2 WCC) got on the board first in the 26th minute when Josmar Guandique took advantage of a poor back pass by the Tigers defense.  Guandique beat the last defender to the ball and cashed in on 1-v-1 opportunity with Caracheo Luna for his team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Just two minutes later, Pacific (2-7-3, 1-0-1 WCC) answered back on a penalty kick conversion by Xavier Cisneros.  Cisneros who was 1-for-2 in PKs this season powered the ball past Broncos goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn who got his fingers on the the ball while diving to his left.  It was Cisneros' sixth goal on the year.
  • Massimo Erfani gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute, skipping the ball past Ozburn from 20 yards out.
  • Santa Clara had an opportunity to tie the match with a PK attempt in the 64th minute.  However, Caracheo Luna was up to the task stopping Alejandro Arenas' attempt to the lower right corner.

HIGHLIGHTS:
POST-GAME COMMENTS:

Head Coach Cam Rast on the game:
"We gave two goals away with the penalty and an ill advised ball late in the first half.  You just cannot concede those types of goals as we were put in a position to chase the game after them.  Offensively, we weren't clinical and weren't very sharp.  It was a really disappointing outcome."

Rast on Guandique's goal:
"It was a super opportunistic goal by Josie.  He came off the bench and we told them to press early.  Pacific played a slow ball and he jumped on it and finished it well.  Great to see it for him and happy for that."

Rast on the first conceded goal:
"We talk about 'the big five moments' and that within five minutes of us scoring, we need to watch out for those moments from the opposition.  But we didn't do a good job with that and didn't make them earn the goal, both goals."

NEXT UP:
  • Santa Clara hosts LMU on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT inside Stevens Stadium.
