SEATTLE — The Santa Clara University women's volleyball team finished a perfect West Coast Conference road trip Saturday, earning its second consecutive sweep with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) win at Seattle inside the Redhawk Center.
Cate Shanahan led Santa Clara (6-10, 2-2 WCC) with 18 kills and added eight digs and two blocks.
Macy Hinshaw finished with 39 assists, nine digs, two kills and one service ace.
Allison Dzieciuch recorded nine kills on a .471 hitting percentage and added three blocks.
Lexi Trapani posted 10 digs, six assists and three service aces.
Santa Clara hit .321 with 51 kills while holding Seattle (3-10, 0-3 WCC) to only .146 hitting. It marked the second time this season the Broncos hit over .300 in consecutive matches, since also logging back-to-back sweeps over Cincinnati and Manhattan on Sept. 1 and 4.
The Broncos earned a hard-fought win in a close first set, 25-23. Shanahan got the clinching point with a kill after Seattle had rallied to cut the margin to 24-23. Earlier, Santa Clara turned a 19-18 edge into a 23-20 advantage with kills from
Danielle Brown, Dzieciuch and
Grace Flanagan around a Seattle attack error.
The Redhawks carried some of that rallying momentum into the second set, taking an early 6-4 lead. But Santa Clara came back, tying it on an
Ashlynn Reilly ace and moving in front 7-6 on her next serve. After Seattle tied the set at 10-10, Dzieciuch put down consecutive kills to put the Broncos back ahead, and Flanagan later added a service ace for a 22-15 advantage. Shanahan got the clinching point again in the second set with a kill.
Trapani served three straight aces in the third set to move Santa Clara in front, 9-4. Shanahan helped keep the Broncos in control with kills for their 21st, 22nd and 23rd points, and Brown, the Washington state native, finished the match with a kill just inside the back line for a 25-17 win.
Grace Jones finished with a double-double for Seattle, logging 19 assists, 10 digs and two blocks. Janae Demant collected a team-high 11 digs and added three assists. Adee Butler led Seattle with six kills. Teagan Melton added five kills on 16 attacks.
