Women's Soccer Clinches Spot in WCC Tournament With Draw Against Portland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara women's soccer played Portland to a 0-0 tie Saturday after a late second-half stretch of five shots and three corner kicks from the 73rd to 79th minute did not change the score. The Broncos (8-2-9, 4-0-5) finished with a 12-4 shot advantage over the Pilots (6-9-3, 2-4-3) and put four shots on goal while recording the shutout at Stevens Stadium.

The tie clinched Santa Clara's spot in the West Coast Conference Tournament next week.

Santa Clara put two early shots on goal in the first half, with Jalana Kimber testing Sophia Hills in the fifth minute and Kennedy Schoennauer doing the same in the 10th minute. Ally Harrison answered with a save in the 17th minute, and Litsy Alcocer added another shot later in the half. The half tightened late with six fouls/cards combined from the 36th to 45th minute, and the Broncos reached halftime in a 0-0 game.

Santa Clara's second-half push created repeated looks but no breakthrough, with five shots and three corners from the 73rd to 79th minute while the match remained 0-0. Harrison saved Portland's shot in the 72nd minute, and Portland later missed a penalty kick before the Broncos answered with another corner and three shots, including Jacey Martinez's saved attempt in the 79th minute. Lucy Wimsatt added a saved shot in the 83rd minute and Addie Whitehouse took a late attempt, but the half ended scoreless and the game finished 0-0.

Harrison played all 90 minutes in goal, made two saves and was credited with a shutout. Schoennauer recorded a team-high three shots, including one on goal. Alcocer added two shots off the bench.

Sophia Hills played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded four saves while posting a shutout. Mao Ito put her lone shot on goal. Journey Middleborn also placed her lone shot on frame.

Santa Clara plays at LMU Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament.
