Broncos Record 10 Hits in High-Scoring Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team scored eight runs on 10 hits Sunday afternoon, but visiting UC Davis used two decisive innings to secure a 13-8 win in the series finale and claim the non-conference series at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis (3-4) scored five runs in the second inning and added four in the sixth to build separation in a game that featured 20 combined hits. The Aggies struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from Tyler Howard, but Santa Clara (4-4) answered immediately in the bottom half. Thomas Ferroggiaro and Ben Cleary opened the inning with singles before Tate Medicoff delivered a three-run home run to left field, giving the Broncos a 3-1 lead.

  • UC Davis responded with five runs in the second, highlighted by Howard's three-run homer. The Aggies added two more home runs in the third — a two-run shot from Zach Story and a solo homer by Houston Hirschkorn — to extend the lead to 9-4.

  • Santa Clara answered again in the fourth. Russ Filter and Koen Carston drew walks before Ferroggiaro worked another walk to load the bases. Cleary lined an RBI single through the right side, Max Ross followed with a bases-loaded walk, and Will Anderson added an RBI single to trim the deficit to 9-7.

  • UC Davis gave itself breathing room in the sixth. After a sacrifice fly brought in one run, Ryan Lee delivered a three-run double to center field to extend the lead to 13-7. Santa Clara added its final run in the seventh when back-to-back doubles from Anderson and Mateo Garcia pulled it within five at 13-8.

  • Cleary finished 3 for 5 – his fourth three-hit game this week – with an RBI and two runs scored, while Anderson went 3 for 3 with a double two RBIs. Medicoff drove in three runs with his first-inning homer. The Broncos matched UC Davis with 10 hits and did not commit an error defensively.

  • Howard led UC Davis with four RBIs and a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double, home run and two runs scored. Elijah McNeal (2 for 4) and Houston Hirschkorn (2 for 5) also had multiple hits for the Aggies. UC Davis reliever Keenan Anzai (2-0) earned the win after throwing four shutout innings from the fourth to the seventh, shutting down the Broncos and allowing the Aggies to pull away.

  • Josh Johnson struck out four over 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, and Vincent Braga added two shutout innings to close the game. Brayden Dotoli also threw an inning of shutout relief with two strikeouts in the fourth.
