RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo dropped a game at Cal Baptist 14-8 on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos (2-13, 0-3 GCC) took the early lead but the Lancers (9-5, 2-1 GCC) answered back and took the lead for good in the first quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Santa Clara scored just over a minute into the game to take the lead, but Cal Baptist responded with the final three goals of the period to hold a 3-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.
- The team's exchanged goals twice in the second to give the Lancers a 5-3 lead at halftime.
- Cal Baptist got the first two goals of the second half, but the Broncos responded with a goal to get within 7-4 before the Lancers scored two more. Santa Clara got on the board with 16 seconds left in the period, but once again Cal Baptist had an answer and scored with five seconds remaining to lead 10-7 at the end of the third quarter.
- The two teams once again exchanged goals twice to start the fourth with the Broncos getting within 11-8 at the 2:33 mark. The Lancers created some distance by scoring the final three of the day to close things out.
NOTABLE:
- Chloe Rizof led Santa Clara with three goals and an assist. Khloe Tarbet and Megan Chambliss both added two goals and Calla Troxel scored once. Avary Torres and Sydney Maccabe both added assists as well. Haley Tassell made 10 blocks in the cage.
- Emmie Ramirez and Delilah Moreno both scored three goals for Cal Baptist with Ramirez also adding a game-high four assists. Three other lancers scored twice with two adding a goal apiece. Devyn Ruffer had three assists as well. Tyanna Schneider made eight saves.
