Baseball Rallies Past Pittsburgh to Open Home Stand

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A four-run inning Tuesday was all the Santa Clara University baseball team needed, as efficient relief pitching did the rest in a 4-3 non-conference victory over ACC member Pittsburgh to open a five-game home stand at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (6-9) erased a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning. It took just two pitches for the Broncos to seize the lead — Will Anderson singled on the first pitch he saw to lead off the frame, and Tate Medicoff followed with a first-pitch, go-ahead two-run homer. A sacrifice fly from Thomas Ferroggiaro and a wild pitch brought home SCU's other two runs to make it 4-1. The rally was fueled by four free baserunners (two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a fielding error) and two wild pitches.

  • Lorenzo Carrier put Pittsburgh (12-3) on top 1-0 in the first with a solo home run, his eighth of the season. The blast could have done more damage, but Caden Dulin failed to run out an infield popup that was dropped by the Broncos, turning himself into an easy out right before Carrier went deep. Pittsburgh got on the board again with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 4-2, then Carrier drove in another run in the seventh — one pitch after AJ Nessler stole second to put himself in scoring position — pulling the Panthers within one at 4-3.

  • Santa Clara turned to seven relievers to protect the lead after taking control in the second. Jack Lazark (1-0) earned the first win of his career with a season-long-tying 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out one, walking none and allowing just two hits. Tyler Alleman (fifth), Josh Johnson (sixth), Hunter Hargett (eighth) and RJ Meyn (ninth) each tossed shutout, no-hit innings.

  • Meyn picked up his second save of the year, but it wasn't easy. He walked two batters to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base — bringing up Carrier with the game on the line. Meyn escaped the jam in style, ending it on one pitch as Carrier grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

  • Ben Cleary reached base three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks. Ferroggiaro went 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Anderson and Medicoff each added hits for the Broncos. Carrier led Pittsburgh, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a homer and a run scored. Starter Antonio Doganiero (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs (two earned) on four walks, two hits, two wild pitches and a hit-by-pitch in 2 2/3 innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 3: Tuesday marked the Broncos' third come-from-behind win in 2026. They've erased 11 total deficits this season at any point in a game.
  • 16: Cleary's active reached base streak was extended to 16 games Tuesday. The streak includes the final game of the 2025 season and all 15 of the Broncos' games this year.
