More Strong Pitching Clinches Series Victory for Baseball

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Another spectacular starting pitching performance coupled with timely hitting Saturday gave the Santa Clara University baseball team its third consecutive win and second in a row over Utah Tech to clinch a non-conference series victory with a 4-1 triumph at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jace Gillmore (1-2) earned his first win of the year by throwing six shutout innings of one-hit ball. It was a career-long outing for Gillmore, who struck out three and walked none, only facing two over the minimum in effectively shutting down the Trailblazers (13-6). Three relievers followed Gillmore and struck out four more while only allowing a single unearned run. Hunter Harggett locked it down with two strikeouts in the top of the ninth, earning his second save of the season.

  • Gillmore and Utah Tech starter Dakoda West (2-2) were locked in a pitchers' duel for six innings. West did his own shutting down of the Broncos (8-9), only allowing two singles through the first four innings and only one runner past first base. West, like Gillmore, also didn't allow a walk and struck out three.

  • Santa Clara finally broke through against West in the fifth, and would go on to score single runs in every frame from the fifth through the eighth. Luke Devine led off the fifth with a single, then scored all the way from first on a double by Tate Medicoff, the first of two for him on the day. Medicoff's fifth-inning drive to center field nearly left the yard again, like it did in Friday night's series opener, but narrowly missed being a home run by hitting off the upper half of the wall.

  • Ben Cleary left the yard for the second consecutive game in the sixth, hitting a one-out solo homer to make it 2-0. Waylon Walsh led off the seventh with a walk and came all the way around to score on Medicoff's second double of the game, making it 3-1. Another free base runner to lead off the eighth (Max Ross was hit by a pitch) came in to score when Devine lofted a single to center field.

  • Santa Clara got three more multi-hit performances on Saturday after logging five on Friday. Cleary went 2 for 3, Medicoff went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Devine went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored. Four different players accounted for the Trailblazers' four hits with none for extra bases. West took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 8: Eight of Medicoff's nine base hits so far this season has gone for extra bases. He leads Santa Clara with four home runs and his four doubles are one short of the team lead.
  • 18: Cleary's reached base safely streak was extended to 18 games Saturday. The streak includes all 17 games in 2026 and the last game of 2025.
  • 23: Santa Clara stole multiple bases Saturday (2) to total 23 on the season. The team stole 34 bases in all of 2025. It is 4-3 in games this season when it's stolen two or more bases.
