SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis head coach Niall Angus tied Sean Burns as the winningest coach in program history with the Broncos' 6-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center. The No. 39-ranked Santa Clara notched their eighth-straight victory to improve to 12-2 on the season to give Angus his 130th career victory in his 10th season at the helm.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (12-2) took all six singles matches after dropping the doubles point to roll past Dartmouth (12-5) and snap their four-match win streak.
- The Broncos got off to an inauspicious start when both of the nationally ranked doubles teams fell. No. 57-ranked Tiago Boschmans and Luca Lemaitre lost to Malhar Patel and Calin Wang 6-3 on court two and No. 50 Luca Bluett and John Kim lost to No. 78 Miles Groom and Henry Ren in a battle of ranked doubles teams, 7-6 (7-2).
- However, Santa Clara answered back emphatically in singles play. Luca Lemaitre got the ball rolling with a quick 6-1, 6-4 victory over Kornel Halmos on court two to even the match at 1-all.
- Lukas Maskow and Luca Bluett followed with victories on courts four and six.
- The match clincher came from Kim over Groom 6-3, 7-5 on court three to secure the Broncos' eight consecutive win
- Angus has a career record of 130-82 and will have an opportunity to become the program's all-time winningest coach when the Broncos take on Cal Poly on Wednesday at home.
- Burns was the head coach from 1994 to 2002 where he posted a 130-91 record during his nine seasons as the head coach.
