Men's Tennis Head Coach Niall Angus Becomes Winningest Coach in Program History

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis head coach Niall Angus earned his 131st career victory on Wednesday with the Broncos' 7-0 win over Cal Poly, surpassing Sean Burns (130-91) as the winningest coach in program history.  Angus, who was named head coach of the Broncos on Sept. 14, 2016 earned his first career dual match victory against Holy Names on Jan. 28, 2017, has a career record of 131-82.

In his 10th season at the helm, Angus has the men's program flying high this season with a No. 40 national ranking on the strength of a nine-match win streak.  They have been ranked as high as No. 38 this season, the highest ranking the program has achieved since 2013 when they were No. 37.  SCU begins West Coast Conference play this Friday at Gonzaga as they look to qualify for the WCC Tournament for the eighth-straight season.

Against Cal Poly, the Broncos (13-2) dropped the first doubles match but came back to win the next two to secure the doubles point and kept on rolling, sweeping all six singles matches to blank the Mustangs (9-7).  Many of his fellow head coaches from the various Santa Clara athletic programs were on hand to congratulate Angus as he was presented with a framed poster signed by the team after the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Luca Bluett, John Kim and Valentin Faure all won both their doubles and singles matches.
  • Bluett and Kim teamed up on court one to defeat Jovan Lubbe and Leo Matthysen 6-4, followed by a win by the tandem of Faure and Ferran Redza on court three to take the doubles point.  Faure and Redza beat Sean Ferguson and Raz Haviv 7-5.
