Baseball Rolls in Series Opener vs. LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — They're back.

The Santa Clara University baseball team snapped a five-game skid in a huge way Friday night, scoring 17 runs on 14 hits – half of them for extra bases – while also getting 11 strikeouts on the mound to blow out LMU, 17-2, in a mercy rule shortened West Coast Conference series opener at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was basically decided in the second inning when the Broncos (10-14, 1-3 WCC) scored 11 runs on eight hits, going through three different LMU pitchers while staking themselves to a 14-0 lead. Santa Clara sent 16 batters to the plate in the second and took advantage of five free passes (four walks, one hit-by-pitch). Waylon Walsh started the inning with a bang, crushing the first home run of his career on the first pitch he saw.

  • Walsh went 2 for 2 with three RBIs in just the second inning alone. Max Ross also went 2 for 2 in the second with two RBIs and Andrew Rayment reached twice in the frame, hitting an RBI double and scoring two runs. The Broncos chased LMU starter Jonah Johnson (2-3) in the second. Zach Bender replaced him, but Bender couldn't record an out and gave up four more runs, as well as the two he inherited from Johnson, forcing the Lions to make another change for Jacob Fried. Fried finally got the final two outs of the inning. He'd end up being the Lions' most efficient pitcher of the night, throwing 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out two, walking none and only allowing one hit.

  • Santa Clara had already struck for three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI hits from Ben Cleary, Ross and Tate Medicoff. Medicoff notched his first career triple off the right-center field wall to cap the three-run rally and make it 3-0.

  • Meanwhile, the Broncos used a pair of Maxs on the mound to get through the run-rule capped seven-inning game. Max Bayles (3-0) earned his third victory of the year with 6 1/3 innings of work. He only allowed one earned run (two total) and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts. He came out in the seventh to get the complete game and got a strikeout to start things, but a single and a fielding error ended his night. Max Reimers entered and walked one before getting a strikeout and a flyout to wrap up the win.

  • The Broncos had five multi-hit games, led by Ross' career-high-tying three hits (3 for 4) and three RBIs. Thomas Ferroggiaro scored a career-high four runs while reaching base four times (2 for 3, two walks). Cleary also reached base four times, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two hit-by-pitches.

  • LMU (8-21, 0-4 WCC) got its two runs on a solo home run from Zach Wadas in the fifth that broke up the shutout, and a two-base error in the seventh inning that allowed Wadas to score all the way from first. Johnson took the loss after allowing 10 runs – all earned – on eight hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • 11: Santa Clara's 11 runs scored in the second inning were the most it's scored in a single inning since scoring 14 in the bottom of the seventh against Boston College on Feb. 17, 2018, in a 20-9 win at Schott Stadium.
