SPOKANE, Wash. – Santa Clara men's tennis extended their win streak to 10 matches defeating Gonzaga 4-1 in the West Coast Conference opener on Friday at the Stevens Center.
The Broncos got off to a slow start against Zags losing the doubles point but recovered to sweep the singles matches to improve to 14-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In doubles action, No. 40 Santa Clara (14-2, 1-0 WCC) won the first match but dropped the last two to fall behind 1-0 on the team scoreboard. The nationally ranked doubles team of Tiago Boschmans and Luca Lemaitre (No. 57) along with Luca Bluett and John Kim (No. 50) could not close the deal for the Broncos after Valentin Faure and Ferran Redza defeated Diego Herrera and Gus Krauel.
- Giovanni Branchetti and Jay Fairclough clinched the doubles point on court one over Bluett and Kim, 7-5 for Gonzaga's (6-7, 0-1 WCC) lone point.
- Faure got the first point in singles, defeating Tom Dunlop 6-3, 6-3 on court five to level the match at 1-all. Alexander Watanabe Eriksson put the Broncos ahead 2-1 downing Oscar Rashed 6-4, 6-3 on court one.
- In the remaining four matches, all of them went to a first set tiebreaker with each team winning two.
- Bluett was the first of the bunch to finish beating Diego Herrera 7-6 (x-x), 6-1 on court six to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Kim closed it 7-6 (x-x), 1-6, 6-1 over Branchetti on court three to extend the team's win streak to 10.
