Baseball Extends Win Streak, Takes Season Series from SJSU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Strong pitching and a steady stream of free passes carried the Santa Clara University baseball team to a 5-3 non-conference win over crosstown rival San Jose State at Stephen Schott Stadium on Monday, clinching the season series and extending the Broncos' winning streak to four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tyler Alleman (1-0) and Brayden Dotoli combined for six innings — three apiece — allowing one run while striking out six. Both outings marked season highs. Alleman earned his first career win with three strikeouts over three innings, and Dotoli followed with three shutout frames and three more Ks. Freshman Max Reimers added a perfect eighth with a strikeout, and Hunter Hargett closed it out with a perfect ninth and two strikeouts for his fourth save of the year.

  • San Jose State (12-16) issued 10 free passes — six walks and four hit batters — and threw three wild pitches, giving the Broncos (13-14) ample traffic on the bases. Three of Santa Clara's five runs came from runners who reached for free, including leadoff hit-by-pitches in both the fourth and fifth innings.

  • Santa Clara opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run rally in the first driven by free passes. Ben Cleary was hit by the first pitch he saw, Johnny Luetzow drew a four-pitch walk and Tate Medicoff added an infield single to load the bases. The Broncos then scored on a hit-by-pitch to Max Ross and a walk to Payton Lambert to take a 2-0 lead.

  • Koen Carston singled home Lambert in the fourth after Lambert was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 3-1. In the fifth, Luetzow was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Ross' double. Both scored on consecutive wild pitches to make it 5-1.

  • San Jose State rallied in the seventh after reaching on an error to start the inning. A four-pitch walk and a bunt moved two runners into scoring position, and Alex Fernandes doubled to the left-center gap to cut the deficit to 5-3. Vincent Braga answered by inducing a groundout and then striking out Jake McCoy after a 10-pitch battle to end the threat.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 10: Santa Clara pitchers struck out 10 batters Monday. It was the 12th time this season the staff has recorded 10 or more strikeouts. The team is 6-6 in those games, though it's won its last three such contests.
  • 26: Cleary extended his reached base safely streak to 26 games Monday. He reached base twice with a walk and hit-by-pitch and scored a run.
