Women's Water Polo Closes Claremont Convergence With a Pair of Defeats

LOCATION – Santa Clara women's water polo lost a pair of games Saturday at Claremont Convergence. The Broncos (3-18) fell to No. 5 Arizona State (22-3) 24-5 before a close 13-12 defeat at the hands of Concordia (11-8).

VS. ARIZONA STATE

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Arizona State came out hot and scored the first six goals of the day before Santa Clara was able to find the back of the cage. The Sun Devils would add three more in the period and lead 9-1 after one.
  • Three more for Arizona State started the second quarter and after the Broncos scored, the Sun Devils added three more for a 15-2 halftime lead.
  • The scoring slowed down in the third with Santa Clara scoring the first goal of the period and Arizona State adding the final two to take a 17-3 lead heading to the fourth.
  • The Sun Devils had another big quarter in the fourth that featured a 6-0 run and seven goals overall.

NOTABLE:

  • Five different Broncos tallied a goal for the offense with Avary Torres recording the team's lone assist. Haley Tassell made three saves in the cage in two periods with Fritzi Warneke playing the final two quarters.
  • It was a balanced attack for Arizona State, led by four goals from Kat Featherstone who also added two assists. Millie Quin and Itziar Almeda scored three times each with four others scoring twice and six others adding a goal each. Leila Meraz had four assists with Miya Tirosh adding three. Sanne Keijzer played three quarters with four saves and Keri Glad had four saves in her one quarter of action.

VS. CONCORDIA

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Four straight goals for the Broncos in the first gave them a 4-1 advantage with 1:56 to go. Concordia scored with 1:24 to go but Santa Clara responded with 48 seconds on the clock. Neither team was done as the Golden Eagles would score with 27 seconds remaining and the Broncos tallied with just 10 seconds to go. Concordia had one more answer at the buzzer and Santa Clara led 6-4 at the end of the first.
  • The Golden Eagles would get within one goal late in the second quarter but the Broncos converted a penalty shot with 13 seconds to go and took am 8-6 lead into halftime.
  • The Broncos got their lead up 10-7 in the third before Concordia responded with three in a row, including the final goal of the period with two seconds left to tie things up at 10 headed to the fourth.
  • The Golden Eagles scored the first two of the fourth and Santa Clara got one back to make it 12-11. Concordia would score again to make it a two-goal advantage with 4:35 to go but the offenses both stalled. The Broncos scored with 13 seconds on the clock but wouldn't regain possession.

NOTABLE:

  • Calla Troxel led the Santa Clara offense with five goals and three assists for a game high eight points. Megan Chambliss added three goals as well and Torres had three assists. Tassell finished with 11 blocks.
  • The trio of Anna Tyukasz, Sierrah Ferguson, and Alexa De Villiers all had two goals with seven others scoring once. Hannah Edwards led the way with four assists. Jaden Soto came up with 15 saves.

  • The Broncos return to GCC play with a matchup against LMU Saturday at 11 a.m.
