Postgame Press Conference

LAS VEGAS
– Santa Clara women's basketball topped San Francisco 87-69 Sunday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Basketball Championship. The Broncos (24-8) started slow but once the offense got going, they were able to take a lead over the Dons (18-13) that they never surrendered.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara started cold from the floor and after making an early 3-pointer, missed 10 shots in a row. San Francisco took advantage with a 7-0 run, but the Broncos came right back with a 10-2 run of their own to get back in front. A last second layup for the Dons cut Santa Clara's lead to 13-11 at the first break, despite shooting just 5-for-19 for the period, thanks in part to forcing nine turnovers and turning them into 10 points.
  • The Broncos got their lead out to seven early in the second before the Dons cut it down to two. An 8-0 run for Santa Clara followed that featured back-to-back triples by Maia Jones to open up a 28-18 lead. The team's went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter with the Broncos leading 37-29 at the half.
  • Santa Clara started the second half on a 10-0 run, with eight of the points, including back-to-back and-ones, coming from Jones, to get the lead out to a game-high 18. San Francisco got the deficit down to 11 with a 7-0 run midway through the quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jones and Kate Schat got the Broncos' lead back out to 18 and Santa Clara led 64-48 at the end of the third.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Mara Neira midway through the fourth quarter got the Dons within 11, the closest they would get. After some back-and-forth, Santa Clara closed the game on a 9-3 run with all the points coming from the free throw line.

NOTABLE:

  • Santa Clara shot 44.3-percent (27-of-61) from the field and went 10-of-25 from beyond the arc, while also shooting 23-of-28 from the charity stripe.
  • Jones led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 4-of-8 from deep with six rebounds. Aniya Hooker scored 13 with six rebounds and Kylee Fox added 12 with five boards. Ashley Hawkins filled out the stat sheet with 11 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
  • San Francisco shot 39.7-percent (25-of-63) from the floor and went 5-of-15 from deep. The Dons were 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
  • Candy Edokpaigbe scored a team-high 20 with Neira adding 17. Aina Cargol scored five with a game-high eight assists.
  • Santa Clara won the battle of the boards 40-32.
  • Hawkins now has 204 assists on the year, good for second in a single-season in program history. The record is 227 be Becki Ashbaugh in 2001-02.
  • This was the first time Santa Clara beat San Francisco three times in a season since 2010-11. It was the first time the Broncos beat any conference opponent three times in a season since Portland in 2014-15.
