Pacific Delivers Setback to Baseball in Series Finale

STOCKTON, Calif. — Luke Devine logged his second consecutive multi-hit game Sunday for the Santa Clara University baseball team and three other Broncos had base hits, but host Pacific scored early and rode the arm of Garret Plata to complete a three-game West Coast Conference sweep with a 7-1 victory at Klein Family Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Devine went 2 for 4 with a double Sunday and scored the Broncos' (14-24, 3-12 WCC) lone run in the seventh inning. It was the sophomore outfielder's fourth multi-hit performance in his last six games. Waylon Walsh brought home Devine with an RBI groundout, making it 5-1 at the time.

  • Pacific (15-23, 7-8 WCC) scored runs in the first, second, fifth and seventh to get out to a comfortable lead. Braeden Schnabel doubled home a run in the bottom of the first to put the Tigers up 1-0. A single and a wild pitch scored two more in the second and made the lead 3-0. Robert Orr singled home two runs in the fifth to push the advantage to 5-0. Pacific hit a home run in the seventh inning for the third consecutive day, this time a solo shot off the bat of Jake Tandy. Orr later doubled home Schnabel and the Tigers led, 7-1.

  • Garret Plata (3-2) entered the week leading the WCC in ERA (1.96) and lowered it even further, throwing six shutout innings Sunday with six strikeouts. Plata only allowed two hits and one walk. The Tigers got a save for the third consecutive day, this time with Connor Raridan throwing three innings to close out the game. He only allowed the one RBI groundout in the seventh while striking out four.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 17: Johnny Luetzow picked up his team-high-tying ninth hit-by-pitch on Sunday, extending his reached base safely streak to 17 games.
