FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis fell 4-0 to Pepperdine in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference tournament on Friday afternoon at the Green Valley Country Club as the Broncos will now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The NCAA Tournament selection show will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. PT and can be viewed here. Meanwhile, the second seed Pepperdine will next face first seed San Diego in the championship match on Saturday.
No. 35 Santa Clara lost to No. 27 Pepperdine for the second time this year. In the regular season, Pepperdine won 4-1 at home, handing the Broncos their lone loss in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Edward Winter clinched the match for Pepperdine (17-8) defeating Alexander Watanabe Eriksson 6-1, 6-1 atop the singles lineup.
- Winter along with Gustavo de Almeida picked up wins in both the doubles and singles disciplines.
- Santa Clara (20-4) fell behind 1-0 dropping the doubles point. At doubles one, Winter and David Fix beat No. 63 Luca Bluett and John Kim 6-3. And at doubles two, Lasse Poertner and Gustavo de Almeida won by the same score over Tiago Boschmans and Luca Lemaitre.
- In singles, the Waves took the first set in five of the six matches putting the Broncos deeper in the hole.
- The first to finish was de Almeida on court four, beating Lukas Maskow 6-2, 6-2 avenging the loss from the regular season when Maskow got the lone point for the Broncos.
- Pepperdine made it 3-0 on Maxi Homberg's victory past Valentin Faure 6-3, 6-1, followed by Winter's clincher.
