Baseball Battles Early at Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team went out for out and inning for inning with host Cal Poly in the early goings Tuesday, but the Mustangs finally broke through in the middle frames and the pitching stayed steady to earn a 7-0 non-conference victory at Baggett Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman righty Trevor Banning posted his third consecutive scoreless outing Tuesday, throwing two shutout innings on the road. It only took 13 pitches for Banning to get through the first two innings perfectly while striking out one. He lowered his team-best ERA to a miniscule 0.63 in 11 appearances this year.

  • Andrew Habermann (0-2) followed with a scoreless third inning, stranding two runners on base to keep the game tied at 0-0. Cal Poly (25-18) finally broke through against the Broncos (16-27) in the fourth inning, but even that took a two-out, two-strike single to get the game's first run across, as the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead.

  • Cal Poly opened things up in the fifth, scoring five runs on six hits, including four doubles, to go ahead, 6-0. Four of those hits (three of the doubles) came in succession, with all four of those scoring runs. Nate Castellon added a two-out solo home run in the sixth to cap the Mustangs' scoring and give them a 7-0 advantage.

  • Four different Broncos notched hits in the game. Freshman Matthew Tiendas tallied his second hit in as many games, and Bryant Viskovich did the same with an infield single off the bench. Thomas Ferroggiaro also had a hit for the second straight game, and Will Anderson got a knock to make himself 6 for 15 (.400) over his last four contests.

  • Five different Mustangs posted multiple-hit games, led by leadoff batter Castellon, who went 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sean McGrath (3-3) earned the win with five shutout innings, striking out six and walking none.
COMING UP
  • The Broncos' road trip continues with a three-game West Coast Conference series at first-place Gonzaga starting Friday in Spokane, Wash. Fans can find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
