Baseball Completes Sweep of Seattle with Another Comeback Win

BELLEVUE, Wash. — The Santa Clara University baseball team continued to control its own destiny Sunday, coming from behind to win for the second day in a row and completing a West Coast Conference road sweep of Seattle with a 4-2 victory at Bannerwood Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (22-28, 10-14 WCC) took a first-inning lead Sunday for the fifth straight day and sixth time in its last seven games. Will Anderson gave the Broncos a 1-0 early advantage for the second time in the series, this time knocking in Thomas Ferroggiaro with an RBI single.

  • Seattle (17-28, 11-13 WCC) answered right back in the bottom of the first, taking its second lead of the weekend with an RBI groundout and an RBI single from Ryder Manale. That forced the Broncos to go to their bullpen early, but as it had all weekend long – the pitching responded. Cooper Lanz entered in the bottom of the first and stranded a runner in scoring position, then proceeded to throw three shutout innings, striking out four.

  • When Lanz got into trouble in the fourth, RJ Meyn (3-3) came in and left two runners in scoring position before marching on to the longest outing of his career. Meyn threw 5 1/3 shutout innings, only allowing two hits while striking out three. He only faced three batters over the minimum across the six different innings he pitched in thanks to double plays in both the eighth and ninth, the last one ending the game.

  • Lanz and Meyn's 8 1/3 shutout innings opened the door for the Broncos to come from behind. Johnny Luetzow crushed his third homer of the year over the center field wall in the sixth to tie it at 2-2, and Ben Cleary drove in the go-ahead run with a bloop single in the seventh. Cleary added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a two-out RBI double.

  • Santa Clara collected 11 hits Sunday, the seventh consecutive game the offense has had 11 or more hits. It also had four extra-base hits (two doubles, a triple and home run), marking the sixth game in a row it's had four or more extra-base hits. Luetzow led all players going 3 for 3 with a home run, RBI and run scored. Andrew Rayment went 2 for 3 with a triple and Cleary went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a double.

  • Payton Knowles reached base four times for Seattle and collected multiple hits (2 for 3) for the third consecutive game from the leadoff spot. Manale finished 2 for 4 with a double. Micah Hagler (3-6) took the loss despite throwing a quality start. He allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits and walking two.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 1: Santa Clara's sweep of Seattle coupled with Portland getting swept at Pepperdine put the Broncos only one game out of the sixth and final spot in the WCC Tournament at month's end with three games to play.
  • 4: Rayment's triple Sunday gave him four in 2026 – tied for second-most in a single season by a Bronco over the last 16 years (since 2011). JonJon Berring's five triples in 2022 are the most in that span.
  • 7: Santa Clara last had double-digit hits in seven consecutive games 16 years ago, from April 23 to May 1, 2010, in games versus Saint Mary's, Stanford, Pacific and Gonzaga.
