Men’s Soccer Signs Internationally Experienced Center Back from Sweden

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer announced the signing of Anton Carell, a 6-foot-3 left-footed defender who started in all games in the Swedish pro club U19 league and with experience playing in more than 100 international club games.

"I chose Santa Clara for the coaches, the facilities and the ability to combine college soccer at the highest level with an excellent education in the most dynamic tech eco system in the world," said Carell.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Carell played last season at the Darlington Soccer Academy's U19 squad in Rome, Georgia where he was appointed team captain for his leadership, consistency and accountability.

From age six through 18, Carell played in the Nordic's top soccer academy IF Brommapojkarna.  He was the Swedish Champion with IF Brommapojkarna Boys 16, a winner of the Mediterranean International Cup and was a two-time Gothia Cup Champion Boys 14 and 12, the world's largest youth soccer tournament.

"Anton is a very talented and functional player with some great experience at high levels of play," said Broncos head coach Cam Rast.  "His size, his left foot but most importantly his ability to read the game defensively and create attacking moments makes him very valuable.  We see his impact being in the backline but his ability to manage the ball and enter the attack allows him play farther forward as well.  Most of his formation took place in Sweden but his desire to play collegiately brought him to the United State for the last two years.  His potential is one of the areas we are most excited about."
