Women's Soccer Looks Sharp in Season-Opening Win at San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer (1-0-0) secured a 2-0 victory over San Jose State (0-1-0) on Wednesday night at Spartan Soccer Complex. The Broncos' (1-0) defense held the Spartans (0-1) to just three shots, contributing to the shutout win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • At 27:12, Schoennauer scored with assists from Hildi Benediktsdottir and Lucy Wimsatt, giving Santa Clara a 1-0 lead. After a pass from Wimsatt, Benediktsdottir slid a pass through and Schoennauer one-timed it into the back of the net.
  • In the 73rd minute, Schoennauer broke through again, scoring with assists from Goulden and Benediktsdottir, increasing Santa Clara's lead to 2-0. Schoennauer took a touch to get around a defender and hit a perfect shot that wrapped around the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

NOTES:

  • Santa Clara finished the night with 18 shots and put 10 of them on target. The Broncos also earned nine corners.
  • San Jose State managed to put two of its three shots on frame and took two corners.
  • Schoennauer also had a brace at San Jose State in the 2024 season-opener. It was her first game with Santa Clara after transferring from Utah.
  • Reynolds finished the night with a pair of saves, including a leaping one to knock a potential goal over the cross bar.
  • Paige Fry stood out for the Spartans with eight saves.
  • Mia Erba, Solana Van Enoo, Lexie Douglass, Lucy Wimsatt, Rylan Cashman, Aoi Kataoka, Litsy Alcocer, and Lovisa Yng all made their Santa Clara debuts. It was the collegiate debut for Van Enoo, Douglass, Wimsatt, Cashman, Alcocer, and Yng.
  • The win gave head coach Jerry Smith 570 for his career, tying him with former UConn coach Len Tsantiris for second-most by a DI women's soccer head coach.
