New Broncos: Natalie O'Dell, Women's Cross Country/Track

Natalie O'Dell has always found peace in motion. Growing up in San Diego, the long stretches of sun and coast became the backdrop to a passion that would define her high school years and lead her to Santa Clara University. For O'Dell, running isn't just about the finish line; it's about the rhythm, the people beside her, and the steady confidence that comes from putting one foot in front of the other.

Now, as she begins her collegiate journey with Santa Clara's cross country program, O'Dell brings with her the same joy and determination that carried her through four standout seasons at Canyon Crest Academy. "I am most excited to train with an amazing team and push myself and my teammates to accomplish our goals while competing for SCU," she said. It's a simple statement that speaks volumes about who she is—driven, team-oriented, and ready for whatever comes next.

Finding Her Place at Santa Clara
From the moment she stepped on campus, O'Dell felt a sense of belonging. "I was drawn to Santa Clara University and its athletics program because of the excellent academics, the team's atmosphere, the coaching philosophies and my coaches, Coach Pete and Coach Luisa," she said. "I felt at home when I visited the school and I knew right away it was the place for me."

That feeling of home has fueled her excitement for the season ahead. With a new environment, new teammates, and new goals, O'Dell is embracing the opportunity to grow both as an athlete and as a person. "I am so excited to explore what Santa Clara University has to offer," she said. Surrounded by a supportive coaching staff and a close-knit team, she's ready to take on the challenges of collegiate competition with the same energy that made her a standout in high school.

A High School Career Built on Consistency and Community
O'Dell's running journey began her freshman year at Canyon Crest Academy, where she quickly established herself as a leader on and off the course. She became a two-time California State Division I cross country participant, posted a personal record of 18:06, and earned third team All-State honors. She was also named first team All-CIF San Diego Section, Division I; was the 2025 Coastal League Individual Champion; and twice earned All-Coastal League recognition.

As the No. 1 runner on Canyon Crest's CIF San Diego Section Division I championship team, O'Dell helped set the standard for excellence. She was also part of school record-breaking relay teams in the 4x1600 and 4x800. But when she looks back, it's not the medals or times that mean the most. "My most memorable moment from my running career would be the long runs I would go on with my team," she said. "We would always find a steady pace and had many fun talks while getting in a good base for the season."

Those miles built more than fitness—they built friendships and a sense of belonging that she now carries with her to Santa Clara. The simple joy of running side by side with teammates, sharing stories and laughter, remains at the heart of why she loves the sport.

People Who Shaped the Path
Behind O'Dell's success are the people who believed in her from the start. "My high school coach, Andrew Corman, was a big influence and helped shape me into the runner I am today," she said. His guidance and encouragement gave her the foundation she needed to excel. Her dad has also been a constant source of motivation. "My dad is also one of my biggest supporters and always pushes me to work harder and put my best foot forward."

Their support has helped O'Dell develop a mindset centered on growth and gratitude. Whether she's tackling a tough workout or celebrating a team victory, she does so with humility and an appreciation for the people who have helped her along the way. That perspective will serve her well as she steps into the next chapter of her running career.

Beyond the Track
While running takes up much of her time, O'Dell finds balance in the simple things. She enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, walking her dogs, and going to the beach. And she's not afraid to share a fun fact about herself: "I am excellent at hoola-hooping. I was an undefeated multi-time champion in elementary school," she said with a smile. She also has three dogs that she loves dearly.

These small joys keep her grounded and remind her that life is about more than competition—it's about connection, laughter, and finding happiness in everyday moments.

Looking Ahead
As she begins her first year at Santa Clara, O'Dell has set clear goals for herself. "A few of my goals for my freshman year at SCU are to meet as many people as possible and work as hard as I can to perform to the best of my abilities in cross country and track," she said. With her work ethic, positive attitude, and love for the sport, she's poised to make an immediate impact.

For O'Dell, the journey is just beginning. With every stride, she's building on the foundation laid in San Diego—one long run, one conversation, one teammate at a time. And as she looks ahead to the season with Santa Clara, she does so with the same steady confidence that has always guided her: one step forward, then another, all in good company."
