SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's volleyball team defeated CSU Bakersfield, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 16-14) Saturday on day two of the Santa Clara Mission Classic at Leavey Center, evening its record on the weekend.
Cate Shanahan was named the "Player of the Match" after notching her second double-double of the year with 10 digs and a season-high 23 kills while hitting .372.
Macy Hinshaw finished with 46 assists, 13 digs and two service aces for her fourth double-double of the season.
Morgan Hayes notched her first double-double of 2026 with 13 kills, 11 digs and six total blocks.
Lexi Trapani put up her second 20-digs performance of the season with 20 digs Saturday to go with seven assists.
The Broncos (3-6) separated after a 9-9 tie, using a
Grace Flanagan kill, Hayes ace, and later kills from Shanahan to build a 20-15 lead. Shanahan added two more kills down the stretch, including the final point, as Santa Clara took the first set 25-18.
Santa Clara led 23-20 in set two after
Danielle Brown's kill, but CSU Bakersfield (3-4) scored the final five points to take the second set 25-23. Earlier,
Ashlynn Reilly served consecutive aces for a 7-2 advantage. The Broncos later got blocks involving
Allison Dzieciuch with Hayes and Shanahan as they stayed in front deep into the set.
The Broncos separated in the third set with Trapani serving, scoring four straight points from 15-14 to 19-14 behind a Flanagan kill, a Hayes/Flanagan block, and Trapani's ace. Reilly added consecutive service aces late, and Shanahan finished the set with a kill from Hinshaw for a 25-18 win.
Santa Clara's main push came after falling behind 12-5, cutting the gap to 19-18 behind three Shanahan kills and a Hinshaw service ace. CSU Bakersfield responded by taking the next three points and finished off the set 25-21.
The teams went point-for-point to start the fifth set, sitting tied 6-6 early. The Broncos pulled away by winning seven of the next eight rallies, with Trapani serving the last four points of that push to move ahead 13-7. But the Roadrunners weren't done yet, as they answered with six consecutive points to tie the set at 14-14. Flanagan's kill put Santa Clara back in front, 15-14. The Broncos' victory was slightly delayed by a coach's challenge, but after review, the Broncos earned the final point and won the fifth set, 16-14.
Jordyn Waite-Ward led CSU Bakersfield with 17 kills, hitting .577 on 26 attacks. Analiese Gagliano recorded a team-high 16 digs and added eight assists. Anna Bacchin finished with 12 kills, 10 digs and three block assists. Luiza Da Cruz posted a team-best 17 assists with 14 digs and one service ace.
The Santa Clara Mission Classic wraps up Sunday with two matches. The Roadrunners face San Diego State at 1 p.m. in a neutral-site match before the Broncos host California at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.

California and San Diego State battled neck-and-neck in the third match of the Santa Clara Mission Classic, with the Golden Bears finally emerging victorious, 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 15-13), in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Leavey Center
The Golden Bears (6-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match with wins in sets one and two, but the Aztecs (4-3) eeked out two-point wins in both the third and fourth sets to even it at 2-2. California jumped out to a big lead in the fifth at 10-3, but once again San Diego State came charging back, scoring nine of the next 12 points to pull within one at 13-12. Back-to-back service errors and a kill from California's Abby Zimmerman clinched the set, 15-13, and the match.
Zimmerman was selected as California's "Player of the Match" after leading the Golden Bears with 17 kills and 20 digs. She hit .300 and also added four aces, three blocks and three assists in an all-around performance. Sawyer Thomsen had 12 kills for Cal, and Cari Bohm had 10. Ella Schabort had 15 kills to lead the Aztecs for the second straight day. She hit .400 while also posting a double-double with 12 digs. Layla Austin had 11 kills and a team-high 20 digs for SDSU.
