SEATTLE – Santa Clara men's soccer and Seattle U played to a scoreless draw in the West Coast Conference opener on Saturday night at Championship Field. The Broncos outshot the Redhawks 15-7 including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net as Seattle U goalkeeper Levi Bieber made four saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (3-5-1, 0-0-1 WCC) put three of their five first half shots on frame but Bieber was up to the task each time with two of the saves came in the final two minutes of the half.
- The Broncos started the second half on the front foot and dominated possession in the early part taking five shots from the 49th to the 59th minute mark, including a Gabrielius Mazonas attempt that Bieber saved in the 56th minute.
- The best scoring opportunity for Seattle U (3-3-2, 0-0-1 WCC) came in the 80th minutes when Dylan Wojdyla's attempt was was cleared off the line by a Bronco defender.
- SCU closed with four shots in the final six minutes of the match, including Diego Jalleau's effort off the top woodwork in the 85th minute, but the match finished 0-0.
- Will Wiersdorf led SCU with four shots and put one on goal. Mazonas recorded two shots, both on frame, for the Broncos' highest shots-on-goal total.
- Jackson Ozburn played all 90 minutes in goal and was credited with a shutout as was Bieber.

- Santa Clara trails the series 1-2-1.
- Jalleau and Moises Almontes had three shots each.
- Former Bronco Quinn Garrett played the full 90 minutes for the Redhawks.

"Seattle is very good at home. In the last three seasons under their coach, they have a record of 17-4-6 at home. They play at a high pace and seem to play better at home so for us to come in and perform as we did by creating moments and outshooting them in both halves, the players did a good job. At times we overcommitted trying to score and had to recover but otherwise, I was pleased with the performance. It was a little frustrating where we had two or three really good chances including one that hit the crossbar but we weren't able to knock it in and they held on until the end of the match. We all felt like it was ours to take and we did a good job for the most part but didn't quite get the result that we worked for."
