Box Score SAN DIEGO — Santa Clara women's soccer defeated San Diego 3-1 on Saturday in the West Coast Conference opener. The Broncos (5-2-4, 1-0 WCC) got a brace from Kennedy Schoennauer and outshot the Toreros 19-7 and 9-4 in shots on target.
Santa Clara turned early pressure into two first-half goals, with Addie Whitehouse scoring in the 24th minute before Schoennauer put the Broncos back in front in the 28th minute after the Toreros (3-5-2) had tied it. The Broncos generated six shots and two corner kicks during nine-minute attacking stretch, then added four more shots after taking the 2-1 lead. Santa Clara carried that 2-1 advantage into halftime.
Schoennauer scored in the 56th minute off assists from Litsy Alcocer and Izzy DeBuyl, moving the Broncos ahead 3-1. Santa Clara added second-half shots on goal from Jacey Martinez, Adee Goulden and Lucy Wimsatt, while Ally Harrison made a save in the 86th minute.
Schoennauer scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and led Santa Clara with a career-high 11 shots, four on goal. Alcocer recorded two assists and finished with two points. Whitehouse scored on her only shot, putting it on goal. Harrison played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
Amanda Anders scored the Toreros' goal and put three shots on frame. Chloe Walls played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves. Marissa Morales recorded an assist and added one shot. Lily Johnson also tallied an assist.
The Broncos host Denver on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
