OMAHA, Neb. – Santa Clara men's soccer erased a two-goal deficit to level the match on goals by James Saggau and Niv Berkovitz but conceded the game winner to Arved von Vegesac to fall 3-2 against Loyola Chicago in the opening match of the Jesuit Invitational on Friday at Morrison Stadium. The Broncos (2-3-0) outshot Loyola Chicago 25-10, including 20 attempts in the second half but came up short in their comeback attempt.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Von Vegesac's game-winning goal came in the 75th minute, just 42 seconds after Berkovitz's equalizer.
- Trailing 2-0 at intermission, the Broncos attack came alive in the second half with three shots on goal in the first 17 minutes, all saved by Ori Yedlin.
- Saggau pulled SCU within 2-1 in the 68th minute off an assist from Wiersdorf and Berkovitz equalized in the 74th minute from Alejandro Arenas after a stretch that included multiple SCU shots and a corner.
- Loyola Chicago (3-0-2) regained the lead shortly after on von Vegesack's goal from Mateusz Drazek as the Broncos' late push included two corner kicks, a pair of Diego Jalleau shots off the woodwork, and two more saves by Yedlin before the match finished 3-2.
- The Ramblers struck for two first-half goals over a 64 second span with Luka Ivancic scoring in the 31st minute and Mateusz Drazek finishing off an Arved von Vegesack assist shortly after to make it 2-0.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
- The series is now tied 2-2.
- Tseu saw his first action of the season, getting the starting nod.
POST-GAME COMMENTS:
Head Coach Cam Rast on the game:
"I'm proud of the way the team battled and fought today after going down by two goals. It's disappointing that we lost concentration and conceded the goals as we need to be better around the box. At the half, we got after the players and they responded."
Rast on the first half:
"We controlled the run early but weren't creating the attacks much. Then we made some changes and just gave up a silly corner kick goal that I don't think it touched anybody. Both teams just fought and bodied each other and it just rolled in as it was not a good goal to give up. And a short while later, they transitioned off our shot, we got rushed in terms of making a decision and they scored again."
Rast on the second half:
"We got after the players at the intermission, made some adjustments and got 20 shots in the second half. We were after Loyola, hunted for goals and James and Niv scored to level the match but then immediately after that, when we were on our front foot and Loyola was reeling, we gave up the third goal and it deflated us. Even then, we settled down again, we moved the ball and had some good chances.
Diego Jalleau hit two off the post but we couldn't even it."
