Chris Perry joined the Santa Clara baseball program in October 2021 as an assistant coach, and is in his fourth season with the Broncos in 2024-25. He came from Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif., where he was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Perry also currently serves as a physical educator at Leigh High School in San Jose.
Perry has been an integral part of guiding the Broncos' pitching staff alongside head coach Rusty Filter. During Perry's time working with the pitching staff, Broncos pitchers have garnered a total of eight all-conference awards. The staff has been ranked among the nation's top-50 in different statistical categories six times.
Perry helped lead a Broncos pitching staff in 2024 that threw five shutouts -- 14th in the nation and best in the West Coast Conference. Perry was part of the coaching staff that helped right-hander Blake Hammond earn first team all-WCC honors and get drafted in the 15th round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Perry assisted with guiding Santa Clara's 2023 pitching staff, which ranked among the nation's best in numerous categories and helped carry the Broncos to their first WCC Tournament title and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 26 years. The pitching staff was No. 12 in the country with a 1.32 WHIP, No. 24 with only 8.3 hits allowed per nine innings, and No. 32 with a better-than 2-to-1 strikeouts-to-walks ratio (2.44). The Broncos' 4.57 ERA led the WCC and ranked 40th in the nation. Three Broncos -- Skylar Hales, Blake Hammond and August Souza -- earned all-WCC recognition.
In 2022, Broncos pitchers ranked 48th in the nation and third in the WCC with 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Three Broncos earned all-WCC honors: Cole Kitchen (2nd), Nick Sando (2nd) and Skylar Hales (HM). During Perry's first season in 2021, Santa Clara was in the West Coast Conference's top-five in four categories: ERA, WHIP, shutouts and hits allowed per nine innings. The Broncos ranked third in the WCC and 61st in the nation with a 1.34 team WHIP. The staff threw four shutouts that season, third-most in the WCC. Right-handed pitcher Brandon Buckley earned second team all-WCC in Perry's first season.
In his eight seasons at Ohlone College, Perry helped develop over 30 Academic All-Americans and assisted over 40 players find and earn scholarships to play at a four-year college. Three of his pitchers earned Coast Division Pitcher of the Year honors in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Prior to his time at Ohlone, Perry was the head varsity baseball coach at Leigh High from 2007 to 2013, leading them to the 2011 Blossom Valley Athletic League - Santa Teresa Division Championship. He helped move 25 players to the collegiate level.
An experienced educator, Perry was the Athletic Director at Leigh High from 2008 to 2012.
Perry received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physical education from Fresno State in 2006 before earning his master's degree in recreation and sport sciences, coaching education at Ohio University in 2012.
