Biography

2000 captain... missed senior campaign in 1999 after straining a ligament in the right foot during off-season workouts... will handle the starting attacking midfielder position... will also be asked to play a defensive midfield role as well... extremely quick athlete who uses speed to separate himself from the defense... possesses good field vision... always dangerous in front of the goal.

AS A SENIOR IN 1999: Redshirted after suffering a season-ending foot injury in the off-season.

AS A JUNIOR IN 1998: One of only three Broncos to have started all 22 matches... tallied a pair of goals and three assists for a total of seven points... recorded his first point of the year in the opening round of the USF/diadora Classic, feeding Michael Goehring for a score during a 5-0 victory over Xavier... credited with the assist on a Shawn Percell goal during a 3-0 road win over Sacramento State on Sept. 27... completely changed the complexion of a Oct. 9 home match against then-No. 22 Notre Dame, scoring just twenty seconds into the second half to knot the game at 1-1... the Broncos would add two more goals and capture a 3-1 victory over the Fighting Irish... sent a corner-kick into the box in the 108th minute at San Jose State, which Keith Burden headed in for the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over the then-No. 9 Spartans... nailed the game-winner at the 13:14 mark of an eventual 4-2 win over visiting Saint Mary's on Nov. 12.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 1997: Played in 15 matches and made one start... made the most of his offensive opportunities, scoring a pair of goals on only seven shots...added one assist for a season total of five points... received his only start of the season against No. 8 Washington on Oct. 5... in one of the most emotional home victories of the season, exploded for his first two career goals during a 5-1 victory over No. 7 Stanford on Nov. 9... with just three minutes left in the first half, drilled the game-winner past the Cardinal keeper, then followed with a second-half score to put the final touches on the Bronco triumph.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 1996: Appeared in all 18 matches and made three starts... recorded 15 shots on goal... posted an assist in the Broncos 2-2 tie at UNLV in the Rebel Classic on Sept. 9... was named the Offensive MVP of the Rebel Classic.

HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL: Attended Gonzaga Prep HS in Spokane, Wash... played forward and midfield for coach Christian Birger... also lettered in football... named All-Greater Spokane League three times and the league's MVP as a senior... helped lead Gonzaga to a second place finish in the state in 1993 and third in 1994... led his club team to a 56-4 overall record, helping them to a second-place finish in the state in the state... graduated with a 3.9 grade point average... majoring in engineering... full name is Joseph Christopher Ascolese... son of Frank and Anita Ascolese... brother Nick is a freshman on the squad... born November 26, 1977.
