Niall Angus

Niall Angus was hired in September of 2016 as the Santa Clara University head men's tennis coach.

In his nine seasons at the helm, Angus has compiled a 118-80 career record including a winning record in seven of those campaigns and finished the season ranked nationally in three seasons.  He is the second winningest coach in Bronco history, surpassing Derek Mills' total of 114 wins during the 2025 dual match season and only trails Sean Burns who had 130 victories.

Santa Clara finished the 2025 season ranked No. 73 nationally and No. 25 in the mid-major rankings after going 15-9 including 5-2 in the West Coast Conference to finish tied for second.  It was the second time in Angus' tenure and the sixth time overall in program history to finish second in the WCC standings for the best finish ever.  The team qualified for the WCC Tournament for the seventh straight season that it was played.  Leading up to the final ranking of No. 73, the Broncos were ranked for 11 straight weeks.

In 2024, he was named the Wilson ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year after leading the Broncos to 19 wins, the most since 2011-12, to finish ranked No. 59 nationally and No. 20 among mid-major programs.  The team earned a postseason berth to the UTR Sports NIT Championship.  At the NIT, the Broncos defeated No. 70 Northwestern in the quarterfinals before bowing out in the semifinal round.

The Broncos were nationally ranked in 12 straight weeks reaching a high of No. 53, the highest since 2014-15, defeating four nationally ranked teams along the way.  The last time the program has been ranked this many times in a season was the 2013-14 campaign when they were ranked 15 times.

In regional rankings, the 2025 team was ranked for the fifth straight season, finishing No. 6 in the Northwest Region.  The 2024 team (19-8 record) finished No. 4 regionally, the 2023 team (16-10 record) was No. 5, the 2022 squad (10-12) was No. 7 and the 2021 team (8-7) was No. 5.

His teams have shined both on and off the courts with the 2019 - 24 squads being named ITA All-Academic teams (pending 2025 announcement) along with 23 WCC All-Academic selections.  As of 2023 winter term, his teams has recorded the highest term grade point average among all Santa Clara men's athletic teams for five straight terms.  Additionally, Angus has coached 18 All-WCC singles players and another 15 All-WCC doubles players.

The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic where the Broncos finished with a 5-7 record but bounced back with yet another winning record the 2021 spring season at 8-7.

The Broncos were on the footsteps of reaching the 2019 NCAA Tournament falling just short, losing in the finals of the West Coast Conference Tournament to San Diego.

In 2017, Connor Garnett received the 2017 West Coast Conference Male Sportsmanship Award based on the student-athlete's dedication to being a great representation of his conference, institution, team, and himself.

Angus spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach for the Broncos after two years of coaching at both the collegiate and junior tennis level. The London native was also a standout player at Texas A&M.

In 2015-16, Angus helped a number of Broncos achieve success. Robert Seby won the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year award and was named to the singles honorable mention team. Ashot Khacharyan was named to the All-WCC Second Team Singles list. Seby and Connor Garnett received an honorable mention nod in doubles.

Angus spent the 2014-15 season in Houston, where he instructed the up-and-coming stars in the game. He taught junior level players and assisted many of them in achieving collegiate scholarships at programs across the country.
During the 2013-14 season, Angus was a Texas A&M volunteer assistant coach. He helped steer the Aggies to a 25-7 record, a season-high ranking of No. 8 in the nation and a tournament championship in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference. He also aided in the development of the doubles pairing of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow, a duo that went on to be ranked No. 1 in the nation that season.
Angus was a four-year star for the Aggies from 2010-13. He helped the school achieve its highest ever ranking during the 2011 season when the team climbed its way to the No. 6 spot in the nation. He also helped lead the Aggies to three NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances in his four seasons at College Station.
As a youngster competing in England, Angus reached a junior high national ranking of No. 4, solidified a ranking of No. 51 in the Junior ITF World Rankings and captured a number of ATP men’s singles and doubles points as a rising player.
