Biography

Former Santa Clara University star and U.S. National Team player Devvyn Hawkins '03 was named an assistant coach for the Bronco women's soccer program on Aug. 10, 2007. Hawkins, who helped lead SCU to its only national title in 2001, replaced Albertin Montoya on Jerry Smith's staff. She is involved in all aspects of the program with a focus on overseeing the team's midfielders."I loved my time at SCU as a student athlete and I am extremely excited and honored to return as a coach," said Hawkins. "I am looking forward to working with a well respected coaching staff and help coach a talented group of women. It feels great to once again be a part of one of the best Division I women's soccer teams in the nation."Prior to coming to Santa Clara, Hawkins, 26, was heavily involved in coaching from 2004-07, serving as the assistant women's soccer coach at Cabrillo College in Aptos, while also coaching youth teams for the Santa Cruz County Breakers. The Sitka, Alaska native has also coached at Aptos High School and with Santa Clara Sporting. She earned her United States Soccer Federation "C" license in 2006."I'm thrilled to have Devvyn back on campus," said head coach Jerry Smith. "In addition to being a great player for us here at Santa Clara University, she was a well-rounded student-athlete and a great leader. Her SCU experience as well as her professional and international playing experience will serve her well when coaching and mentoring our current players. Devvyn will be very comfortable overseeing our midfield group as that is where she has always played. Additionally, Devvyn's coaching experience at the club and Community College level over the last several years has allowed her to gain some very valuable knowledge."As a player, Hawkins, who grew up in Olympia, Wash., had one of the most decorated careers in Bronco history, playing for SCU from 1999-2002. She helped lead Santa Clara to its only national title in 2001 and then helped the team reach the championship game the following season. As a senior captain, she was named NSCAA All-American Second Team, Soccer Buzz All-American Second Team, NSCAA All-West Region Second Team, and All-WCC First Team, while also being named Santa Clara's Player of the Year and Most Inspirational Player.In all, the midfielder was named All-WCC four times and All-West Region three times in her career. She started 88 of 93 career games and recorded 21 goals and 20 assists in her illustrious Bronco career. During her four seasons at SCU, she played three times against North Carolina and the Broncos won all three games, including a 1-0 win in the 2001 National Championship Game. She scored the Broncos only goal in their 2-1 overtime loss to Portland in the 2002 National Championship Game.Hawkins' strong play also earned her a spot in the U.S. national team player pool. She played in nine matches from 2001-2003 for the Americans and scored one goal. Her goal was a golden goal strike against Germany to help the U.S. win the Four Nations Tournament in China in 2003. After leaving Santa Clara, Hawkins was selected third overall by the Boston Breakers of the Women's United Soccer Association. She played for the Breakers in the final year of the league (2003) and helped them win the regular season championship with a 10-4-7 record.Full Player Bio

AS A SENIOR IN 2002: An NSCAA third-team All-American... a second-team NSCAA All-West Region honoree... named a Soccer America MVP... a second team All-America from Soccer Buzz... earned first team All-West Region honors from Soccer Buzz... a first-team All-WCC selection... earned All-Tournament Team honors at the College Cup... named a preseason All-American by Soccer America Magazine... a team captain... was one of two players that started all 26 contests... was called up to join the National Team, but sprained right ankle during practice on Sept. 2, and declined National Team offer... assisted on two of the Broncos' four goals against Oklahoma... named the adidas Classic Defensive MVP... scored the equalizer against UCLA en route to an overtime win... added an assist against Saint Mary's ... scored the fifth goal in the Broncos' 6-0 over Gonzaga... collided with an Arizona State defender in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and received 11 stitches in her head... occurred in 34th minute, but returned to the field and re- entered in the 70th minute... could not head the ball during the following week, but scored the game-winner against Nebraska in the third round on a header... added the Broncos' first goal against Michigan, a header off a corner kick... assisted on Veronica Zepeda's first goal of the College Cup semifinal... scored first goal of the championship match... scored three goals in last four matches of the season and finished with six goals and five assists for 17 points.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2001: Named a second team preseason all-American... a third-team NSCAA All-West Region Team member... earned second-team All-WCC honors... scored at San Jose State, finishing off a rebound from Ballweg's shot... started 19 matches and tallied 10 points on four goals and two assists... missed matches against California, Dayton, SMU and San Diego State for personal reasons... father had become gravely ill and passed away soon after... rejoined the team and started every match since... registered a goal and an assist in the Broncos' 10-0 victory at Gonzaga... added a game-winning goal in the regular-season finale against Colorado College... headed in a goal off a corner kick in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Syracuse... sprained medial collateral ligament in left knee in closing minutes of regulation against Florida in College Cup semifinal, but was able to start against North Carolina.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2000: Named an honorable mention All-WCC selection... also named to the adidas Bay Area Classic All-Tournament Team... started all 22 contests... registered two goals and three assists for nine points... posted one goal vs. California during a 1-1 tie at the Bay Area Classic... scored final goal of the season at San Francisco during the match's fifth minute.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 1999: One of three players to appear in all 24 matches, and earned the starting nod in 20... a first-team All-WCC selection and Soccer Buzz All West Region Team honoree... produced nine goals and 10 assists, totaling 28 points... began the year with two goals and five assists during first four matches... ended with three goals and three assists during the last five regular-season contests... in collegiate debut, came off the bench to team with Danielle Slaton for double-assists on both goals in a 2-0 victory at California... assisted on a goal that gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 defeat against eventual Pac-10 champion Stanford in the home opener... had a goal and an assist at cross-town rival San Jose State... gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead during a 3-1 victory at Washington after heading in a corner kick... after a six-game scoring drought, exploded for two goals and an assist against Alabama in the championship game of the Santa Clara/Nike Classic... had a goal and two assists within a seven-minute span of the first half on Oct. 17, helping Santa Clara to a 4-2 win against sixth-ranked Notre Dame at Buck Shaw Stadium... was a large factor in Santa Clara's run to its third consecutive WCC title, netting goals against Loyola Marymount, Portland and San Francisco while handing out assists against Pepperdine, San Diego and the Dons over the final five games of the season... her header into the back of the Portland net at 17:32 was the game-winner... assisted on a game-winning goal in the regular-season finale against San Francisco before scoring later in the match... scored first post-season goal during Santa Clara's 3-0 win against Connecticut in the national quarterfinals... scored at the 73:39 mark to give the Broncos their final margin of victory.

NATIONAL TEAM EXPERIENCE: A member of the U.S. National Team... named to the U.S. National Team roster for the 2002 friendly against Finland, but sprained ankle during SCU spring training and did not participate... was a member of the 2002 Algarve Cup team... played on the European tour that took on Italy before taking part in the Algarve Cup... started in the midfield in her international debut, a 1-0 loss to Italy ... almost scored a goal in a win over Portugal, but heading of a corner kick went just over the crossbar in the match's 89th minute... started four of five matches as the team placed sixth in the cup after a loss to Norway... a member of the U.S. U21 National Team that won the 2001 Nordic Cup... a member of the U.S. Under-18 National Team while in high school.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Capital High School in Olympia, Wash., under coach Scott Seaman... named to the 1998-99 Parade All-America team... led Capital to Rivers League championships in sophomore and senior seasons... earned three league MVP honors and four consecutive first team accolades... four-time team MVP... also lettered in basketball and track & field... finished fourth in the 400m state championships as a sophomore... played for the F.C. Royals '80 club team under coach Brian Van Blommestein... played with Kerry Cathcart on the 1997 and '98 squads... led Royals to three consecutive Washington State titles in 1997, '98 and '99... helped squad to regional championship in 1997... team went on to finish third at the national finals... graduated with a 3.9 grade point average.
