Broncos Strong At Home Against Santa Cruz 12-8

Santa Clara, Calif- Santa Clara's No. 18 ranked men's water polo team took care of business at home once more, defeating UC Santa Cruz in Sunday's game. The Broncos are currently riding a six game winning streak after today. Andrew Fitch led the team in scoring for the first time this year with four goals.

"It was a real good game with a good crowd," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Santa Cruz was definitely a much improved team from what we saw before, so it was a good win."

Santa Clara actually trialed in the second quarter 5-3 before tying the game up at 5 going into halftime. They took the lead in the third quarter and never relinquished it on their way to a 12-8 win.

"Fitch had a huge game," said Wilbur. In addition to recording a season high in goals, he also drew two kickouts as well as playing great two meter defense as he has done all season.

Josh Early, Nicholas Poggetti, Tommy Kelly, and Tommy Hendrickson all scored two goals apiece for Santa Clara.

Poggetti, a freshman, had most likely his biggest game as a Bronco, notching two assists, a steal, and three kickouts along with his goals.

Kelly had two kickouts as well and Hendrickson had three assists in addition to their goals. Charlie Moore did not score, but filled up the stat column with four assists, a steal, and two kickouts drawn.

Robert Callahan played the entire game in the cage and blocked twelve shots with a steal. "Rob had another solid game for us," said Wilbur.

The Broncos are now 2-0 at home this season. They do not play another official game for two weeks when the team takes on Loyola Marymount on October 26th, but next week, Saturday, October 20, is the annual alumni game.

There will be two alumni games this year, the first will be at 11:45 a.m. and will feature a team made up completely of alumni which will compete against the current team. Then at 1 p.m. there will be a game which will pit then even numbered graduating years against the odd. A barbeque will follow for all the current and former athletes and their familes.
