Santa Clara's No. 11 ranked men's water polo team fell in its
home opener to No. 9 UC San Diego on Saturday, 10-7. Santa
Clara was led by Nick
Poggetti's two goals.
UCSD scored immediately to open the game with a 1-0 lead in the
first 45 seconds. UCSD took a 4-2 lead after the first
quarter. Santa Clara's goals were scored by Stephen Hobbs and
Marcus
Akerland.
In the second quarter both teams scored once with Mitch Klipa
hitting the back of the net. The score was 5-3 at half
time.
UCSD scored three goals in the third quarter with the Broncos'
James
Case scoring on a break-way. UCSD led 8-4 after the third
quarter.
SCU scored on two goals by Klipa and Poggetti in the fourth
quarter to make it 8-6, but UCSD responded quickly to make it 9-6
UCSD. Santa Clara's final goal was scored by Poggetti.
