FULLERTON, Calif. - Pat Stover hit a three-run
homer in the second inning to put Santa Clara University in front
early at No. 9 Cal State Fullerton, but the Titans came roaring
back to score seven in the bottom of the inning en route to winning
an 18-11 slugfest at Goodwin Field Sunday.
Due to commencement exercises at Cal State Fullerton, Sunday's
game began at 3:30 and was called after eight innings due to Santa
Clara's travel curfew.
Stover had a career-high five hits, going 5-for-5 with four RBI
for Santa Clara (21-30). Stover's classmate, freshman leadoff
hitter Matt Ozanne went 3-for-3 with two doubles.
However, the Broncos' 17 hits were not enough. The SCU defense
committed four errors and the home standing Titans touched up SCU
pitching for 19 hits. Cal State Fullerton (37-15) completes the
sweep, winning Friday 8-0, Saturday 6-4 and 18-11 in the finale on
Sunday.
Nick Ramirez homered during Fullerton's seven-run second inning
off Chris Mendoza (4-6) and Jon Hughes. Mendoza was charged with
four runs and Hughes eight as the Titans built an 11-3 lead before
Hughes was lifted in the fifth.
Fullerton scored in every inning but the first. Right fielder
Carlos Lopez had three hits, including a three-run homer off
Hughes. Lopez drove in six runs. Starter Dylan Floro (6-0) allowed
12 hits but picked up the win.
Santa Clara will return to the Los Angeles area to play three
games at Loyola Marymount next weekend, which concludes SCU's 2010
schedule.
